Maxton man dies in accident

A Maxton man was killed in an alcohol-related accident last week, authorities say.

Corey Locklear, 25, of 1456 Red Banks Road, Pembroke has been charged with DWI and felony death by vehicle in the death of 46-year-old Todd Flanagan, of 4518 Prospect Road, Maxton, according to the state Highway Patrol. Flanagan was a passenger in Locklear's 1993 Chevrolet pick-up truck.

Locklear was driving the truck south on State Road 1565 when he ran a stop sign at the intersection with State Road 1571 and struck the trees, the patrol said. Flanagan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. Locklear, who was also not wearing a seat belt, suffered only minor injuries,.

The accident happened about 6 a.m. Thursday, about 200 yards outside of Pembroke.
