A total of four people were injured in separate vehicle accidents on Thursday.

In one wreck, a car plowed into a funeral procession, sending three people to the hospital.

In the other, a truck pulled out in front of a moped, injuring one man.

A tan 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by 24-year-old Alicia Johnson was crossing over Gill Street on Hillside Avenue at the end of a funeral procession when it was struck by a older-model blue Buick Regal driven by 47-year-old Rose Dial, according to Laurinburg police and eyewitnesses. The accident occurred at about 4 p.m.

Dial, of Laurinburg, and her lone passenger along with Johnson, of Rocky Mount, were taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital by EMS. The four passengers in Johnson's vehicle declined medical attention.

In a normal situation, the driver traveling on Hillside Avenue would have had to yield the right-of-way, according to Lt. Rodney Strickland. That changed because the van was part of a funeral procession. State law requires motorists to yield to processions, as does a local ordinance.

Dial is charged with failure to yield the right of way, Strickland said.

Police said the van was traveling at about 10 mph and the car was traveling at about 35 mph. Both the driver and passenger airbags deployed properly in the van while the car was not equipped with airbags, the police said.

Both vehicles were destroyed.

The scene was cleared in about 30 minutes.

Shortly after 5 p.m., a call went out that another accident had occurred in Laurinburg.

A Chevrolet Avalanche driven by Veronica Paige Strickland on Crepe Myrtle Road toward Main Street pulled out in front of a red Vino moped that was driven by Charlie Williams, which was traveling on Atkinson Street towards U.S. 74 Business, according to police.

Williams was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital with a bloodied face. The moped was destroyed while the truck had a dent in the passenger door.

Police were still investigating the accident and had not filed charges or determined fault by press time.

Laurinburg police, the state Highway Patrol, Laurinburg firefighters, Scotland County Emergency Services and Scotland County Heavy Rescue responded to both accidents.
