Two Scotland High Schools seniors have been named semi-finalists for the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Catherine Dial from the School of Health Sciences and Victoria Morrow from the School of Visual and Performing Arts will have their regional interviews for the scholarship in January 2009.
Dial, the daughter of Richard and Cyndie Dial, hopes to attend UNC to major in biology or pre-medicine then attend medical school to practice pediatric medicine. Morrow, the daughter of Paul and Margie Morrow, plans on majoring in journalism at UNC. Her ultimate career goal is to become a foreign correspondent for National Public Radio.
“We are very proud of these young ladies and what they have accomplished,” said Tiari Gladney, Scotland High Schools Scholarship Coordinator. “I wish them best of luck as they continue through the Morehead-Cain selection process.”
The Morehead-Cain provides a full four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that includes:
* An annual stipend that covers full tuition and all other normal expenses, including student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, travel, and miscellaneous
* Laptop computers for all entering freshmen
* A fully funded, four-year Summer Enrichment Program, beginning the summer before the freshman year
* Discovery Fund grants of up to $8,000 total over the course of four years at Carolina to be used for educational opportunities
The total value of the scholarship over the four years is approximately $80,000 for in-state residents and $140,000 for out-of-state residents.
