A few weeks ago, it just so happened that Shae Barnes was in the right place at the right time.
The rising junior at Scotland High School will be playing as a member of the Carolina Elite 16-and-under traveling softball team that will take part in the ASA National Tournament in College Station, Texas starting on July 30.
Coaches of the Greenville, South Carolina-based team spotted Barnes while she was playing for the Darlington Ice in the ISA Showcase back in June.
"Carolina (Elite) first saw her down in Florence (SC) in the showcase and really liked the way she played," said Lois Barnes, Shae's grandmother. "They chose her to come on and replace some players that had gotten injured."
Even though this is a great opportunity for her, Shae is still plenty nervous about not only the competition but getting to know a whole new group of girls.
"I feel a little nervous but feel good at the same time," said (Shae) Barnes. "It's great exposure for me because scouts and coaches have a chance to take a look at me."
Barnes, who will play center field for the Elite, led the Scots during the regular season in home runs (two) while tying teammate Sarah Laviner in RBIs with 21. She also had a .430 batting average with a .557 slugging percentage.
For her grandmother, she feels that this is a great opportunity for Shae to represent Scotland County on a national level.
"I felt that this was a good opportunity to represent Scotland County and Scotland High School. I'm real excited for her and this is not only a great honor for her but also a great challenge and to know that someone feels that she is good enough to go with them (Carolina) to the nationals," said (Lois) Barnes. "This is a great honor to her coach (Patrick Williams) as well."
Barnes, the daughter of Angela Barnes of Gibson, will be leaving for Texas next Wednesday, July 28, but in the mean time, her family is looking for donations to help get them to the Lone Star state.
