UNCP ranked 10th overall among all U.S. colleges and universities with 136 American Indian graduates in 2008-09. That number represented 18 percent of all graduates and is three percent higher than the previous year.
UNCP led all Eastern U.S. higher education institutions.
The University annually ranks very high nationally for producing American Indian biological and biomedical science graduates. For 2008-09, UNCP ranked 3rd nationally.
Diverse magazine delivers an annual report titled “Top 100 Minority Undergraduate Degree Producers.” It charted African American, Hispanic and American Indian grads in several degree areas.
UNCP also ranked high for American Indian graduates in:
• Social Sciences and History – ranked 3rd, up from 6th last year
• Education – ranked 8th
• Business – ranked 21st nationally, up from 40th last year
UNCP was founded in 1887 to train American Indian schoolteachers and blossomed into a four-year degree granting university in 1939 and a master’s granting institution in 1978.
The University offers 41 undergraduate majors and 17 master’s degrees, including the Master of Business, Public Administration and Social Work degrees.
