A fire at a Laurinburg apartment complex has left about 10 people without homes and caused more than $90,000 in damages.

Officials say no one was injured in the Tuesday night fire at Scotland Manor Apartments.

The blaze began about 11:15 p.m. witnesses say and engulfed one apartment building before firefighters could arrive.

Darean Parker, who lives in the complex, said he and four other young men saw the fire bellowing out a window and began warning residents.

"We starting screaming that there was a fire and knocking on doors," said Parker, whose apartment was not affected. "Everything got really hot, even the ground. You could smell the smoke all over the complex."

About 15 firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:30 p.m. and cleared the area in just over an hour.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. A report by the Laurinburg Fire Department said there were no smoke detectors present in the apartment where the fire began.

The report estimated the smoke and water damage to the multi-family dwelling at $85,000, as well as a loss of $5,000 worth of property inside the home. The fire also caused an estimated $2,500 worth of smoke damage to an adjacent apartment, the report said.

"We were really fortunate that no one was harmed," said Carol Ann Lentz, the executive director of the Scotland County American Red Cross chapter, which was at the scene to help.

Lentz said that 10 people were affected by the fire, including five children, but all were in good condition.

The fire victims were put into temporary housing last night and were helped with immediate emergency needs such as clothing, food and shelter.

"It was like a madhouse," Parker said of Tuesday's fire. "People were yelling and upset, but we were still able to come together and get everyone out and that's all that matters."

Scotland Manor Apartment manager Wendy Jackson said she could not comment on the incident as a matter of company policy.
