Teen accused of stealing weapon

A Laurinburg teen was arrested for possession of a stolen handgun, according to police.

The 16-year old boy was stopped, along with another teenager, by Officer James Brayton Munger in front of I.E. Johnson school, according to the report.

The report stated that Munger stopped the teens because the neighborhood is known to be a drug area. He asked the teen if he had any weapons on him. The minor denied having a weapon and consented to a search.

Munger found five .380 caliber bullets in his front, right pants pocket. He asked the juvenile where the gun was and minor responded that he did not have the gun.

At this point, other officers arrived and Munger asked them to search the surrounding area. Officer Terry Chavis found a chrome .380 Jennings semi-automatic pistol approximately ten feet from the teen.

Police ran the gun through their database and found the gun had belonged to Marie Frances Pate and was reported stolen in 2004. The gun is valued at $150.

The teen was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.

The juvenile was placed in Scotland County jail under a $15,000 secured bond.
