A car thief narrowly eluded capture after the stolen car he was driving broke down, according to a police report.

The incident happened early Friday morning.

Officer Kristy Lynn Crowley, of the Laurinburg Police Department, was traveling north-bound on the US 15-401 Bypass when she noticed a car traveling at a high rate of speed approaching her from behind.

Crowley changed lanes to let the car go by her, but the car also changed lanes. Crowley swerved to avoid an accident. She then turned on her sirens.

It was about this time that the officer noticed the car, a tan 1991 Ford Crown Victoria, did not have a license plate.

The car initially slowed down and acted like it was pulling over, before accelerating.

The car took Highway 74 East, turned onto Highway 71 North and then onto Bryants Circle. The vehicle attempted to turn left onto McBreds Drive when the vehicle stopped.

It appeared to Crowley that the driver blew the engine.

The driver jumped out and fled into the woods. Police searched the area but was unable to locate the man.

One of the officers recalled a tan Ford Crown Victoria sitting n Bennett's Foreign Cars. When police checked the property, they noticed the vehicle was missing. Officers also noticed an open window. An air-conditioning unit was on the floor near the window. Apparently, the suspect pushed the unit in to gain access to the business through the window.

George Bennett, the business owner, was contacted and identified the vehicle as his.

The police report indicated the vehicle was valued at $1,000. The air conditioner, which was damaged, was valued at $250.

The suspect was described as either a white or indian male with dark brown hair. He was wearing a white shirt under a black sweater, a tan colored hoodie, light-colored blue jeans and boots.

If captured, he will be charged with burglary by forcible entry, theft of an automobile and failure to stop for blue lights and sirens.

Anyone with any information on this incident is requested to call the Laurinburg Police Department at (910) 276-3211.
