Nearly two dozen stolen guns were seized in a raid on one of the county's top drug dealers, a sheriff's investigator said Thursday.

William Alexander Jones, 42, was arrested on multiple drug charges after officers searched his home at 22080 Aberdeen Road for narcotics and stolen items on Thursday afternoon, according to Investigator Scott Jacobs, with all seven sheriff's investigators helping to comb through the property while executing search warrants.

The conference room of the sheriff's office resembled an armory as investigators streamed in with handfuls of rifles, leaning them against a table covered with electronics and several handguns also recovered in the raid.

Deputies seized 19 rifles, two handguns, a television and two computers in the raid, along with prescription pills and an unspecified amount of cash.

William Jones is charged with two counts each of possession with the intent to sell and deliver a controlled substance, the sale and delivery of a controlled substance and maintaining a drug dwelling after undercover buys of Methadone and Clonazepam from the 42-year-old as part of an ongoing drug operation, Jacobs said. An additional count of possession with the intent to sell and deliver was added after Methadone was found in the house.

Jacobs described William Jones as a top distributor of prescription pills in northern Scotland County, saying the accused dealer would "doctor shop" to obtain prescriptions.

William Jones has also been charged with two counts of possession of a stolen firearm and one count of possession of stolen goods as both handguns and the television were confirmed stolen, Jacobs said. Those items were reported stolen to Laurinburg police and are worth an estimated $2,000.

More charges are expected as deputies continue to identify which items have been reported stolen, he said.

Investigators currently believe that William Jones was selling stolen goods on the black market, Jacobs said. William Jones told investigators he was an avid gun collector and the accumulation of arms was from a lifetime of collecting, not for illicit gain.

Jacobs said more arrests are expected in the case.

"I feel real good about this arrest considering the recent violence in the county and surrounding counties," Sheriff Shep Jones said.

Seizing more than 20 firearms believed stolen was a good haul for investigators, he said.

"We are going to work really hard to get these guns off the street," the sheriff said.

Guns and prescriptions are among the most stolen items in Scotland County and this raid could put a damper on the black market sale of both, he said.

William Jones was charged with manufacturing marijuana after deputies seized 56 pot plants from his yard over a year ago, but that charge has since been dropped. Jacobs said the charges were dismissed when two key witnesses were unable to testify as one moved out of the area and the other was hospitalized.

William Jones is currently awaiting trial for four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.
