The Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce held a meeting this week to discuss specifics about the upcoming trip to China that the Chamber is planning for October 1-9.

Theresa Lamson, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, said that the total cost is $1,899 per for members of the Chamber of Commerce and $2,099 per for people who are not members of the Chamber. The first $200 of this amount must be paid at the time of registration, she said. The remaining amount must be paid before August 31. This total includes round-trip air fare from New York's JFK Airport to China, hotel accomodations, deluxe tour buses, fees for all attractions, meals, tour guides and any other applicable taxes.

Peter Liu, a representative from Citsline International, started by discussing some of the specifics of the trip. The trip comes at a great time, Liu said, because of the World Expo, which will be occurring in China during the entire month of October. The World Expo displays galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. The World Expo will bring about 20 million people to China during the month under the theme of "Better City, Better Life." This theme emphasizes two main goals: to represent the common wish of the whole of mankind for better living in future urban environs, such as Beijing and to highlight the cross-cultural dialogues that are very important for future global understanding, cooperation and development.

He went on to talk about certain important facts about the trip, such as each person is only allowed to carry 70 pounds of luggage with them, that the flight from JFK Airport to Beijing will take 13 hours and locations that the group could visit during optional excursions. He said that those who go will be staying in 4- and 5-star hotels during their time in China. One of the biggest concerns that Liu highlighted was the necessity to wear comfortable clothes and shoes while on the trip.

The trip will allow those who are going to visit four Chinese cities, as well as see sights such as the Great Wall of China, the Forgotten City and Tiananmen Square.

John Ferguson, one of the attendees, said he is going because "to see a different culture, to better understand a different culture" is something that everyone should be interested in.

"If you had an opportunity to go, why not?" he said.

Brenda Gilbert, the chamber's Workforce Development coordinator, said that she is going because this is "a chance of a lifetime to go."

According to Lamson, if anyone is interested in going, they should know that a trip like this is the experience of a lifetime. With the presence of the World Expo in China during the group's trip, the group is anticipating a unique experience. Additionally, she said, the trip would be with members of your own community, instead of relative strangers. She also said that the price for the trip is unbeatable.
