The Fourth of July holiday reminds many people of fun and fireworks, and Scotland County and the town of Maxton will have all those on display at annual holiday celebrations this week.

Maxton will hold its annual Fourth of July event on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m at Beacham Park.

The Independence Day celebration will play host to a variety of holiday favorites, including food, games, a jumbo slide and live music.

Laurinburg and Scotland County will host a joint event on Saturday starting at 8 p.m at Pate Stadium. A fireworks display is set to begin at 9:20 p.m.

Maxton event

Much like the Scotland County fireworks show, the Maxton event will have sparkles, but will also host other games and features as well.

"We're starting the event at 4 p.m. and will have a host of events for kids and their parents," event Chairperson Minnie Miller said. "We will have games, watermelon spitting contests, hula hoops, checkers, bingo and tractor rides. We want to make sure that everyone has something to do out there."

The event will also have vendors serving up tasty Fourth of July treats including hotdogs and hamburgers.

Miller said that there will also be tractor rides available for children and a bounce house.

After the opening fun, the official program begins at 5 p.m. It will begin with a dance by the Just In Jesus Mime Team.

After the dance, the town will recognize town officials and honor veterans at the service.

Miller said that the celebration will have more than six different live entertainment groups, including a Michael Jackson impersonator.

Performers will include Adrian Blackman of Nazareth Church of Wagram, Mary Ann Gibson United Gospel Dance Team of Friendship Baptist Church in Hamlet, the All Male Gospel Choir and Mime Team of Sandy Grove Baptist Church, the Armstrong Family of Maxton, and the Forgiven Gospel Group.

Miller said that this is at least the fourth year of the event and that she expects a large crowd.

"We are expecting over 1,000 people," Miller said. "We want at least 1,500. It has been a huge success ever since we started it and we want to continue to build a tradition. Its gonna be a great event. We just thank everybody for everything they've done. Its a great day everyone is looking forward to. It's always been successful. We want to keep things going."

Beacham Park is located on South Austin Street in Maxton.

Saturday's event

The ceremony at Pate Stadium will be a joint city and county event. All people of Scotland County are invited to attend.

The main attraction for the annual event is a live fireworks display.

Those coming to the ceremony can park in the school parking lot and on the school's access road, but no parking is allowed on US Highway 401.

Laurinburg City Clerk Dee Hammond said that the event will be a special one.

"I think it's going to be a great event," Hammond said. "The fireworks event is a great event for this area. There are so many people and I think that everyone will enjoy the fireworks."

Visitors are reminded that that since the event is on school grounds, no alcohol is permitted at the event.

Those at the ceremony can purchase water, soft drinks, candy bars and snacks from the Scotland Band Boosters. The event is one of the band's many fundraisers throughout the year.

Hammond said that she expects more than 3,000 people to attend the event.
