They will supply free electric fans to Scotland County residents who are 60 and older.
About 35 fans will be collected from the Wal-Mart in Laurinburg and taken to Church Community Services to be distributed.
The effort is part of Operation Fan/Heat Relief, which serves to help reduce heat problems in the home for some of our community's most vulnerable populations.
One of the most unique aspects of the whole project is that no public money is involved. That is quite a feat when you realize that last year, donations totaled $98,500 allowing 5,423 fans and 51 air conditioners to be purchased.
Part of the cost of the fans for residents here has been paid by Wal-Mart. The rest is being funded by Progress Energy and the Area Agency on Aging.
The Division of Aging and Adult Services in the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has managed the program since 1986.
The summer fan distribution program operates May through September each year throughout North Carolina.
The program is open to those 60 and older and people with disabilities. Participants receive one fan per year to help alleviate heat problems within their home.
While we know these fans will help make people more comfortable, they can also be lifesavers for older residents with chronic health problems that require medication that can affect the body’s natural defenses against heat and humidity.
