Scottish Food Systems has partnered with the Scotland County Chapter of the American Red Cross to provide free meals to blood donors beginning July 1, according to Scotland County Chapter of the American Red Cross Executive Director Carol Ann Lentz. The announcement was made this week during the annual meeting of the local Red Cross chapter.

"Scottish Food Systems has always been very generous to the American Red Cross, and this arrangement will be a win-win situation for all," Lentz said. "We are very excited about this venture, and we thank Scottish Food Systems for their support."

Beginning in July, anyone who donates a unit of blood to the Red Cross will receive a free meal at either Kentucky Fried Chicken or at Pizza hut, both franchises owned by the restaurant management company.

Maria Bingham is director of marketing for Scottish Food Systems.

"The idea to present free meals to blood donors came from our president, Thomas A. ("Tab") Broome," Bingham said. "As a past supporter of the Red Cross and other causes, we felt it would be a good way to both support the efforts of the Red Cross and to advertise some of our new products."

Donors in Scotland and in Robeson County will be given a coupon good for either a Pizza Inn buffet or for a new sandwich to be introduced by Kentucky Fried Chicken called the "Doublicious".

"This will be KFC's new signature sandwich," Bingham said. "We hope a lot of people will give it a try after receiving their free coupons."

Lentz said donors will be eligible to give every 56 days, or every 112 days if giving platelets.

"Remember that every unit donated has the potential to save three lives," Lentz said. "Blood drives have fallen off over the past few years as industries have left the area, but the people are still here.

"We urge you to take advantage of this offer to receive a free meal in exchange for giving the gift of life," Lentz said. "The need now is greater than ever before."

The next scheduled blood drive in the county will be July 13 at Scotland Memorial Hospital. Call the Red Cross at 276-0600 for information.
