Two Maxton residents were killed early Saturday morning when both were thrown from their vehicle in a single-car accident.

Earl Locklear Jr., 60, of 243 Onnie and Joe Road, Maxton, and Joe Locklear Jr., 61, of 280 J.P. Road, Maxton, were not wearing seat belts when the 1995 Ford SUV they were in crashed and overturned, according to a report by Trooper M.D. Locklear of the state Highway Patrol. The report did not indicate if the victims were related to each other.

According to the report, Earl Locklear was driving the vehicle south on Missouri Road when it left the road to the right, he overcorrected, the vehicle returned to the road, overturned, exited the road to the left, struck a ditch and came to rest in a cornfield. The report estimated the vehicle was traveling 75 mph in a 55-mph zone.

The report said the results of a toxicology test are pending.

The accident happened at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, about seven miles northeast of Maxton. The vehicle was destroyed. The two victims were the only people in the vehicle.
