A Laurinburg man is in custody for the slaying of a man whose body was found dumped near Laurel Hill.

Brandon Nicholas Huneycutt, 23, was arrested Thursday at his 916 Aberdeen Road home and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 30-year-old Harold Leon Cook, according to Sheriff Shep Jones. He is being held without bond in the Scotland County jail.

Cook, of Queen Road in Laurel Hill, was found dead in overgrowth along Armstrong Road on Thursday morning. Investigators say Cook was shot twice, once in the head.

Cook appeared to have died of shotgun wound, Jones said. A shotgun was found at Huneycutt's home that investigators believe was used in the shooting.

The sheriff said investigators believe the cause of death was from gunshot wounds, but are waiting for autopsy results from a medical examiner in Chapel Hill, expected next week.

Smith said a deputy was investigating a missing persons report filed at 10 a.m. when he found the body, which had two gunshot wounds, one to the head.

Harold Walters, the victim's father, said he was told his son left home at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night to go to his third-shift job, but never arrived at work.

The victim's car was found near the body.

Harold Walters arrived at the scene as investigators were still identifying the body. He became visibly distraught when informed of the death of his son by Smith.

Jones said the arrest, which was made at about 4:30 p.m., or a little more than six hours after Cook was reported missing, was the result of a "very aggressive" approach to investigating homicides.

The sheriff's office had all seven of it's investigators working on the case, he said.

"We put every resource towards it."

He said solid leads led to the speedy arrest.

Jones declined to comment on possible motives or what linked Honeycutt to the crime.

This is the first reported murder in Scotland County in 2010.
