A Harnett County man is in jail after leading Laurinburg officers to Society Hill, S.C. in a chase with speeds exceeding 80 mph, according to police.

Leon Horace Graham, Jr., 32, of Neat Drive, Lillington, was arrested by Darlington County sheriff's deputies on Saturday morning after the 30-mile, three-county pursuit, according to a Laurinburg police report. He is currently being held in South Carolina.

Laurinburg police have issued warrants for speeding to elude arrest, driving with license revoked and reckless driving.

An officer saw two south-bound vehicles swerve off of U.S 15-401 to avoid hitting a northbound burgundy 1995 Geo as it was passing several vehicles, the report said. The Geo was driven by Graham.

The officer activated his blue lights and followed the Geo as it turned down several residential roads, reaching speeds of 55 mph on a 35 mph zone. The Geo then ran a stop sign while turning back onto 15/401 traveling south.

Three Laurinburg patrol cars pursued the Geo into South Carolina, with Graham reaching speeds of 80 mph in a 55 mph zone while weaving in and out of traffic. The officers continued to follow the vehicle, slowing their pursuit in Tatum, S.C. so that South Carolina law officers could take over the chase, the report said.

The chase continued through Bennettsville and then into Society Hill, where officers deployed tire spikes to stop the Geo. The driver took his vehicle to a residence on McBride Avenue and then ran from his vehicle into the home, the report said.

A witness told officers it was the home of Graham's father.

Mary Ann Wright, Graham's live-in girlfriend who was a passenger in the Geo, told officers that she had pleaded with him to stop but he told her that he wanted to show that he was not afraid of the police. She also told police that Graham had been drinking earlier in the night.

Graham is being held under several charges in South Carolina, including resisting arrest, and will be turned over to Laurinburg police at a later date.

This is not the first time Graham has led officers on a chase. He has twice been convicted of speeding to elude arrest, according to the state Department of Correction. He has also been convicted of common law robbery and larceny of a motor vehicle.

He is currently awaiting trial for driving while license revoked in Harnett County, according to court calendars.
