Laurinburg Institute and Howard University have partnered to establish a five-week science, technology, engineering, mathematics and language arts program to take place on the Laurinburg campus, according to Institute Headmaster Frank H. "Bishop" McDuffie.

The program is geared to high school and high school postgraduate students.

"I am very excited about this," McDuffie said. "Having Howard University as a partner to work with local kids in the area is inspiring. This collaboration can only be helpful to Scotland County."

He said the project is expected to enhance the Institute’s current curriculum.

"(The program will) provide professional development to the STEM and Language Arts teachers and all other core course teachers, and will enhance academic skills for the students in all of their core courses while paying particular attention to their STEM courses," he said.

The Capstone Institute is an extension of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed At Risk (CRESPAR), which operated as a federally funded educational research and development center at Howard University in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University. The program focuses on "educating the whole child," according to institute literature, and interlinks research, theory and practice in the areas of learning, curriculum and instruction, professional development, parent and community engagement, and others.

Dr. A. Wade Boykin, professor and director of the graduate program in the Department of Psychology at Howard University, is heading the partnership development.

“Our program is committed to enhancing, augmenting, and boosting the academic and life opportunities for our students," Boykin said. "Through intensive support in the areas of professional development training for teachers and staff, curriculum audit and alignment, and evidence based academic support components, the Laurinburg Institute model will offer a program suitable for national replication”.

Registration for the program will be limited to 20 area students, with classes held from June 10 through July 17.

The cost for the program is $50 per week with major financial assistance available on a need basis only.

Students and parents may pre-register beginning today by calling 276-0684 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or by emailing tiger1lnii@yahoo.com.

Founded in 1904, Laurinburg Institute is the oldest of four remaining historically black boarding secondary schools in the United States.

Notable graduates from Laurinburg Institute include jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, Sir. John Swann, the first black premier of Bermuda, Dr. Joy Johnson of the North Carolina General Assembly, and NBA Hall of Famers Sam Jones and Charlie Scott.

Laurinburg Institute was recognized by the United States House of Representatives in 2009 for its distinguished services and contributions to the State of North Carolina and the nation.
