St. Andrews Presbyterian College head men’s basketball coach Richie Schueler will once again make the trek across the Atlantic Ocean this summer to coach and monitor a pair of international basketball competitions.

Coach Schueler will serve as the head coach for the USA Athletes International team in the Italy Continental Cup before serving as an administrator to the basketball portion of the United World Games.

“Anytime that you can experience a different style of the game will give you knowledge to help better yourself as a coach,” said Schueler. “I view these opportunities as a chance to gain insight on how we can continue to improve the St. Andrews Basketball program.”

The USA Athletes International team consists of college basketball players of all levels that are looking to gain exposure with European profession teams.

Coach Schueler will be coaching the USA Athletes International squad against semi-pro and club teams throughout Italy from Jun. 6-15. The team will make stops in Venice, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Tuscany, and the Vatican.

“I’m excited to coach against a very high level of international competition,” said Schueler. “Italy is known for having one of the best brands of basketball that Europe has to offer. I think we’ll have a strong team and should fare well throughout the duration.”

After his trip concludes in Italy, Schueler will shift his attention to the 2010 United World Games in Austria from June 17-20. Schueler will be monitoring the basketball portion of the event.

The United World Games is an international competition featuring over 350 teams from 25 countries that also has tournaments in soccer, handball, tennis and volleyball.

Schueler added, “For me, going to Austria as a part of the United World Games will be an absolute amazing experience. I’m thankful to the UWG administration for having trust in my abilities to be sure that the basketball games will run fairly and smoothly. Some of the best young players from around the world will be playing in this event and I’m hopeful that we can land a recruit or two from my time there.

Coach Schueler made a similar trip in 2009, coaching the USA Athletes International team during a summer trip that included destinations like London, Paris, Belgium, and Amsterdam.
