A long standing golf tournament for a worthy cause featuring a handmade Amish quilt raffle will be among the attractions when the ninth annual Faith Presbyterian Golf Tournament takes place June 24. The event will begin at 1 p.m. at Scotch Meadows Country Club with a shotgun start, captain's choice format. Seniors may tee off from the senior tee markers.

"This tournament is begin held to assist the ministry of Faith Presbyterian Church," Tournament Chair Jane Callahan said. "A benevolence of 10 percent of the proceeds will go toward the mission cause of the Scotland Family Counseling Center, which has offices in Scotland and Robeson Counties."

Callahan said that donating to the counseling center was fueled by need.

"Due to the economy of this nation, and particularly that of our county, we feel it is both appropriate and a dire need for our benevolence to go to the Scotland Family Counseling Center," Callahan said. "Many people need this service due to loss of jobs, lack of food, and high bills going unpaid. These are stressful times and the church needs to nurture as much as possible."

Charles Wentz of the nonprofit Scotland Family Counseling Center said members of his organization are "really grateful" for the tournament donation.

"These funds will be used to help people who don't have enough money to pay for counseling," Wentz said. "We serve the unemployed, the underemployed, and anyone having difficulty on a number of fronts, not just financial."

The Scotland Family Counseling Center is located at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church. According to Wentz, their caseload has doubled over the past year.

"Often these issues begin with employment problems and can spill over into marital and family difficulties, substance abuse, and depression," Wentz said. "We first received proceeds from Faith Presbyterian Church in 2007, and we are really grateful that they have chosen to continue this assistance again in 2010."

The quilt to be raffled is a Love Birds Amish Quilt, valued at $600, and was designed approximately 15 years ago by a woman from Lane County, Pa.

"It is all hand appliqued and quilted," Callahan said. "The quilt has approximately 400 yards of thread used in quilting, and was handmade by one of the finest artists at Country Lane Quilts of Leola, Pa. Chances on this beautiful item are $2 per ticket, and any member of Faith Presbyterian Church will gladly sell you as many as you would like to purchase."

The entry fee for the tournament will be $60 per person, which includes a light meal after play prepared by the Presbyterian Women of Faith. Drinks and snacks will be provided during play.

"Please mark your calendars and plan to come out to have fun, fellowship, and a wonderful meal prepared by the Faith Presbyterian Women," Callahan said.

Registration brochures may be obtained from Scotch Meadows Country Club or by calling Callahan at 276-2016.
