A two-car collision at a dangerous intersection sent three to the hospital on Wednesday.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of Gill Street and Aberdeen Road in Laurinburg at about 10:30 a.m.

Saffo Jacobs, 75, of Dillon, S.C., was traveling east on Gill Street in a green 1992 Ford Expedition and ran the stop sign at it's intersection with Aberdeen, striking the front-right panel of a tan 2001 Ford Explorer traveling south on Aberdeen, according to Sgt. Jason Butler, Laurinburg police. The Explorer had two female occupants.

The driver of the Explorer attempted to swerve to the left to miss the Expedition, but was unable to avoid it, Butler said.

The driver of the Explorer had an "instinct to swerve from danger," Jacobs said.

Jacobs told the officer that he had blacked out and does not remember stopping at the stop sign.

"He never hit his brakes," Butler said.

Jacobs is charged with failure to stop at a stop sign.

Both vehicles came to rest in the ditch by the north-bound lane of Aberdeen Road. The front end of the Expedition was damaged and the vehicle was facing west. The Explorer stopped facing south and had damage to the front-passenger side.

Debris from the vehicles was spread across the road over a 50 foot area.

After the wreck, the two women were laid on the grass near their vehicle, where rescue workers fitted them with neck braces in anticipation of being loaded into ambulances and taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Jacobs stayed in his SUV until rescue personnel were able to load him into an ambulance.

All three were being treated in Laurinburg and were in stable condition, Butler said.

The Explorer sustained $10,000 in damages and the Expedition sustained $5,000 in damages, Butler said. Both were total losses.

The intersection of Aberdeen Road and Gill Street has more than it's share of accidents, according to police.

Butler attributed any additional risk to speeders.

Aberdeen Road has a speed limit of 35 miles per hour, he explained, but the speed limit is 55 about a mile north on the same street. Many drivers fail to slow after the speed limit changes.
