Melissa Yvette Graham, 24, was in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, according to McColl Police Chief Tommy Langley.
Graham told officers that she was at her Gibson Avenue home with some of her friends when she heard a knock at the door at about 2 a.m. on Sunday, Langley said. She asked who it was and a man responded "Jimmy."
Graham opened the door thinking it was a friend to find a masked man brandishing a handgun, according to the report.
The gunman forced his way in and demanded Graham hand over her valuables, Langley said.
Graham told police that she thought the guy was a friend who playing a prank on her, so she asked him to "stop playing," Langley said.
"I'm not playing," the masked man responded.
He then pulled the trigger on his gun twice without the gun firing, Langley said. He pulled the trigger a third time, shooting Graham in the chest.
The gunman fled on foot after firing the shot, without taking anything.
Graham was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle and was transported to Charlotte on Monday.
Langley said the suspect was described as being a black male wearing ski mask, blue jeans with faded spots, a long-sleeve black thermal shirt and had a blue and white bandana around his face. He had a silver handgun.
