The husband of a Maxton police officer was involved in a collision with a bicyclist last week, according to authorities.

John Deese, 37, of Maxton, was driving in the east-bound lane of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive on Wednesday when a bicycle traveling east in the westbound lane crossed the center line in front of Deese's 2005 Ford pickup truck, the report said. The cyclist's bike was struck by the truck, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The bicycle being was driven by Ernest Brown, 47, of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Maxton.

Brown was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the accident, the patrol said. The agency has not filed any charges in the case.

John Deese is the husband of Capt. Tammy Deese of the Maxton Police Department, the agencies second-highest ranking officer. She was not in the vehicle at the time of the wreck.

The accident happened inside the Maxton city limits, which gives the town's police department jurisdiction over the case. Maxton Police Chief Damon Williams said he turned the case over to Highway Patrol because John Deese is married to a Maxton police officer.

"I did not feel comfortable with any of our officers handling it," he said.
