Members of Joseph Temple Ame are pulling funds together to help a Laurinburg man in need of a kidney transplant.

The church will host a yard sale and hot dog sale this Saturday from 6 to 10 a.m,

Proceeds are expected go to help Scotland County native David Burgess, 36, who is in need of a kidney transplant, according to Robert Malloy, chairman of the Trustee Board for Joseph Temple AME on Caledonia Road in Laurinburg,

The church wants to raise $5,000 in order to pay for the medication and medical needs necessary after the transplant.

Burgess works for Scotland County Parks and Recreation as a football coach.

In August 2008, he was diagnosed with renal failure and was prompted to start dialysis. He currently goes to Scotland County Dialysis every Monday Wednesday and Friday for treatment.

Burgess said that he's been on dialysis for "1 year eight months and 27 days."

The loss of kidney function contributes to several problems including an accumulation of water; waste; and toxic substances, in the body, that are normally excreted by the kidney and can also lead to anemia, high blood pressure, acidosis (excessive acidity of body fluids), disorders of cholesterol and fatty acids, and bone disease, according to emedicinehealth.com

After a routine check up on April 20 at Duke University Hospital, Burgess found out that he would need a kidney transplant.

Burgess is on the transplant list and anxiously awaiting a phone call from Duke University Hospital.

According to Burgess, in order to receive the kidney transplant he has to show that he has $5,000 available to cover the cost of the aftercare.

If he gets the kidney transplant, Burgess said he will be on medication for the rest of his life.

"I would hope that knowing the situation, as it is, that people have the heart and participate and share any funds or any donations to the activity that we're having and that those people would gladly do so knowing that he is in need of the funds," Malloy said.

Burgess said that he's looking forward to the fund-raising activities.

"I feel good about it. The people from Laurinburg know me pretty well," he said.

Those interested in donating items for the yard-sale should call Annette Reed at 318-1739.

The church has opened an account named David Burgess Kidney Transplant at First Bank.

Those interested in donating money should call Helen Malloy at 266-8113.
