U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell, a Democrat, and Republican Tim D'Annunzio were the big winners in Scotland County, according to unofficial returns.

Election returns across the 8th District were still coming in at presstime. The 8th District race was considered one of the most closely watched in the nation.

In Scotland, Kissell turned back a challenge from Nancy Shakir of Fayetteville. Kissell, who is from Montgomery County, got 3,098 votes while Shakir received 2,025, according to unofficial returns by the Scotland County Board of Elections.

D'Annunzio was the top Republican vote getter here with 309 votes. Hal Jordan came in second in the county with 132 votes. Lou Huddleston of Fayetteville was third with 102 votes here. Also in the race were Lee Cornelison, Darrell Day and Harold Johnson.

D'Annunzio captured much of the attention during the primary, partly because he loaned his campaign at least $800,000 and was the top spender; and partly because of his "machine gun socials," in which participants could fire guns as part of the event.

All six candidates said they were strongly opposed to the Obama administration's policies, particularly the health care bill.

Kissell, who was among few Democrats who voted against the health care bill, was opposed by Shakir, who said he was too conservative for the Democratic Party.
