PEMBROKE – Track & field’s David Lynn and softball’s Jelena Shaw took home most outstanding student-athlete honors, while cross country’s Pardon Ndhlovu and softball’s Holly Berry grabbed freshman of the year honors, to highlight UNCP’s athletic awards banquet Sunday afternoon at the University Center Annex.

The most outstanding student-athlete honor annually goes to a 4-year letter winner at UNCP who has maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. They must demonstrate good sportsmanship and have represented UNCP well both on and off the playing fields, as well as in the classroom. The freshman of the year award is annually given to a first-year letter winner who has made a major impact on his and her team in the first year of competition. Both laurels are voted on by UNCP’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Lynn has been a regular contributor for the men’s track & field squad this season, capturing 14 top 10 finishes across three events – shot put, discus and javelin – while booking first place finishes a handful of times, including last weekend with a top finish in the shot put at the 2010 Southeast Regional Championships. His best performance this season came at the UNCP-hosted Braves Track & Field Classic when he captured first place laurels in the hammer throw and fifth place in the javelin.

Shaw started all 48 games on the softball diamond in 2010, registering a team- and conference-leading .437 (66-for-151) batting average to go along with 11 home runs, 44 RBI and 55 runs scored. A first team all-Peach Belt Conference selection, Shaw also captured the program’s first PBC Player of the Year awards since 1993 as well. She will leave UNCP well represented in the record books, including program-best career marks in batting average (.405), hits (276), runs scored (202) and stolen bases (90).

Ndhlovu led the way for the cross country team in each of the seven races during the 2009 season. His long list of accomplishments include winning the UNCP Cross Country invitational, the UNCW Seahawk invitational and the ECU Pirate invitational, while finishing fourth at the Great American Cross Country Festival and second at the PBC Championships. An all-conference and all-America selection at season’s end, he shattered a 22-year-old school record with an 8K time of 24:35 at the Great American Cross Country Invitational. He has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division Track & Field Championships after registering a time of 14:43 in the 5000-meter run at the North Florida Invitational.

Berry captured PBC Freshman of the Year laurels after registering a .423 (63-for-149) batting average with eight home runs, a team-leading 47 RBI and 30 runs scored. Berry started 46 games for the 29-19 Braves en route to booking 20 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI outings. She hit safely in each of the first 13 games of her collegiate career and tallied at least one hit in 38 of the 36 games she played in.
