The Scotland boys track team got ready for next week’s Southeastern Conference meet by doing the same thing that they’ve been doing all season: dominating.
The Scots beat out second place Lumberton by 80 points (120-40). Purnell Swett finished with 14 points.
Scotland Coach Wes Mattera was pleased with the performance despite having to overcome some obstacles.
"It was a good day for the Scots despite missing some seniors who were on the senior trip and having several people banged up with nagging injuries," said Mattera. "Conference Championships next week at Pinecrest. It should come down to the Scots and Pinecrest for the conference title. Scots have to overcome the pole vault disadvantage."
Scotland swept the relay events by winning the 3200-meter relay.
Tony McRae, Josh Quirk, Travis Wall, and Isaiah Robinson won both the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays.
Jeron Wright, James Anderson, Red Covington and Chris Moss made it a clean sweep by winning the 4x400 relay.
Lamont Browne brought home first place in both the triple jump and 110-meter hurdles.
Dominique Green earned the win in the high jump while Trey Edwards won the long jump.
Trevor Harris earned first place finishes in both the shot put and discus while qualifying in the shot put.
Sey’yan Moody earned himself a first place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
The final meet of the regular season was bittersweet for Mattera, as he will be leaving to start his new job as the football coach at Edenton High School on Monday, but none the less, he is proud of everything the team has accomplished so far.
"I want to thank all the guys and our assistant coaches for all their hard work so far this season. The guys have really bought in to what track can do for them and the results speak for themselves," Mattera said. "We have already had college coaches stop by and ask about a number of our athletes b/c of what they have done on the track so far this spring. ECU, App St, Duke, Wake Forest, NCSU, UNC, and everyone else is recruiting speed an it has become contagious among our guys. I wish all of them nothing but the best of luck in the future as they look to bring home a conference championship. Go Scots! "
