"This book is for anyone, but I originally wrote the material to help middle school students get a better idea of what life was like during the times of the New Testament," Marshall said. "I began using the notes that I had accumulated from over 15 to 16 years of research when I was teaching ninth grade Bible verse, and was unable to find a suitable book that addressed the people, the places, and the activities of the day."
Marshall developed the material in order to help students understand that the Bible "did not take place in a vacuum", and that an understanding of the times was "a vital component" in one's understanding of New Testament teachings.
"Then it occurred to me that I should put this material together in book form, so I submitted it for publication."
Originally published in 2007 by Tate Publishing Enterprises, the book can be purchased online at Amazon, Wal-Mart, Barnes and Noble, and similar outlets, at The Gospel Music and Christian Bookstore in Laurinburg or at The Good News Christian Bookstore in Hamlet. An audio version of the book is available through the publisher.
Elmer L. Towns, Liberty University vice president and dean of the School of Religion, described Marshall's book as "an extremely practical New Testament survey for use by students. (The book) will prepare a student for a lifelong study in the Word of God."
Sandra Sauerwein, director of the Chieftain Institute, agreed.
"Dr. Marshall is a wonderful teacher of the Bible, and his (book) ... helps students see God's purpose as a whole for his people with clear explanation and the right amount of detail to grasp the big picture."
A native of Maryland, Marshall and his wife Linda moved to Laurinburg in July 2009. The couple have three grown daughters who live in Dallas, Texas and in Virginia. Marshall said he and his wife "love" living in Laurinburg. "We're so thankful to come here," he said.
Marshall holds a graduate degree in theology from Liberty Home Bible Institute, a Graduate of English Bible degree from Texas Baptist institute and Seminary, a bachelor's degree in religion and a master's degree in religion from Liberty University, and others.
