WILSON—Freshman first baseman Daniel Oliver from St. Andrews Presbyterian College was named the 2010 Conference Carolinas baseball Freshman of the Year as voted upon by the league’s head coaches at last week’s conference tournament. Senior Samson Williams and junior Jack Crawford also earned Second Team All-Conference accolades for SAPC.

“It was a great accomplishment for these three young men,” said SAPC head coach Keith Williams. “Each of them was very deserving of the honor.”

Oliver, a Plymouth, N.C., product, earned the Freshman of the Year distinction after batting .321 in 43 games for the Royal Blue & White. Oliver accumulated 24 RBI, 24 runs scored, three home runs, and a team-high 12 doubles while boasting a team-best .985 fielding percentage at busy first base. The right-handed bat was one of the most consistent mainstays in the Knights lineup in 2010 hitting safely in 32-of-43 games including a pair of nine-game hit streaks.

Coach Williams added, “…what a fantastic honor for Daniel! He was able to come in as a freshman and give us another quality bat in the middle of the line-up, while also adding a solid defensive presence at first base. Daniel slowly established himself as a team leader and a player that was admired not only for his abilities on the field, but his presence off it.”

Samson Williams obtained Second Team All-Conference honors for his offensive presence in the St. Andrews lineup while patrolling right field for the Knights. Williams leads SAPC with a .635 slugging percentage, 115 total bases, 46 games started, 62 hits, 42 runs, 10 home runs, and six triples. Williams ranks second on the team with 40 RBI, 17 walks, and 11 doubles. The Wilmington, N.C., native also ranks third on the team with a .343 average and 19 stolen bases.

Jack Crawford earned his Second Team All-Conference reward from the mound. Crawford led the Knights pitching staff with a 4.80 ERA, four wins, four complete games, 54.1 innings pitched, and 10 appearances. The lefthander from Burlington, N.J., also ranked second on the team with 42 strikeouts.

“It was nice to see Jack and Samson receive acknowledgment from the other coaches as they both had great seasons for us this past year,” concluded Coach Williams.
