A renewable energy company may locate a plant near the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, Scotland County's economic developer said Tuesday.

Viridian Biomass has arranged to buy an 85-tract of land currently owned by St. Andrews Presbyterian College to build a $14 million facility with 12 employees.

Icard said the company has passed the first step in getting a conditional-use permit as the Scotland County Planning and Zoning Board voted to recommend approval at it's meeting last week.

The Scotland County Board of Commissioners will vote on the measure at it's 7 p.m. meeting on Monday.

The next part of the process will be acquiring permits from the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The company will convert organic waste, such as yard clippings and food waste, into a biomass that can be used for fuel at the plant, Icard said.

He said the plant will help reduce landfill usage, but did not know how much of an impact, if any, it would have on Scotland County.

Icard said he has been working with the company for several months. He said he found the site for Viridian and helped the company get in contact with St. Andrews.

A spokesman for the project could not be reached for comment on Tuesday.

St. Andrews Presbyterian College declined to comment on the land deal, citing school policy prohibiting officials from discussing pending property sales.

Icard said that the county's successes with green energy companies – besides the biomass company eyeing Scotland County, the largest solar array in the South East being constructed in Laurinburg – is a sign that Scotland is "forward thinking."
