A Laurinburg man was jailed without bond after a domestic assault turned into kidnapping, according to Laurinburg police.

Phillip John Graham, 21, of Chestnut Street, was arrested in East Laurinburg and charged with second-degree kidnapping, common law robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of assault on a female and injury to personal property, according to Detective Chris Young.

Graham confronted his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old Rhonika Everette, just after noon Friday because she had taken out warrants on him, according to Young. Graham approached her white 1994 Honda Accord and tried to enter through the driver-side door, police say.

After finding the door locked, police say Graham reached through the car's open sunroof and began striking Everette.

Graham then ran to the other side, where he opened the passenger-side door, Young said. He then chased her into the front yard of a home on Second Street.

Everette's cousin, 48-year-old Alexis Manning, and Manning's mother tried to get between Graham and Everette, according to Young. He then attacked both women, picking up a glass bottle and striking Manning.

Graham managed to get the keys to Everette's car and ran to the vehicle to flee. Manning attempted to stop the 21-year-old by jumping in the vehicle, but Graham fled with her in the vehicle. He stopped the car on Bizzell Street and fled on foot.

Police caught Graham in East Laurinburg, about 30 to 45 minutes after the initial incident, Young said.

He is being held without bond for assaulting Everette, which is considered a domestic assault. He also has an additional $200,000 secured bond for the other charges.

Young said there was a history of domestic violence in the relationship.

Graham, also known as "Smurf," is a member of the street gang the United Blood Nation, according to the state Department of Correction.

He has been convicted on three drug charges, two counts of larceny, breaking and entering, assault on an officer, fleeing to elude arrest, and hit and run. He has spent more than 2 years in prison over two stints. He was released on Feb. 8.
