Unfortunately for the Scots, its journey hit a detour Friday night.
Fueled by a seven-run fourth inning, Purnell Swett pounded out 11 hits and picked up a key SEC win over Scotland, 11-4, at McCoy Field.
Scotland (11-7, 3-3 SEC) also left 11 runners on base including two or more in each of the first four innings.
"We just sat on the lead. We left too many runners on base," said Scotland Coach Tommy Britt. "Wednesday (vs. Marlboro Co.) we did that and managed to get away with it. We hit the ball early with guys in scoring position and had a chance to bust it open but couldn't do it."
The Scots gained the momentum early when Greg Jorgensen took the Rams Mark Oxendine deep to left field for a two-run homer and the early lead, 2-0.
It would stay that way until the top of the fourth when Purnell Swett’s bats came to life.
A two-run double by Caleb Jacobs scored Matt Lowry, who led off with a double to tie the game at two.
Following an RBI walk by Marcus Hunt to take the lead, the Rams made it 5-2 following a two-run double from Jim Allen Locklear.
"I just preached to them to keep battling,"Purnell Swett Coach Will Clark said. "In the past we would fold if we got down 2-0. I told them that if they continued to battle and hit the ball then good things would happen."
The Scots cut the lead to 7-4 on an RBI fielder’s choice from Derek Barnes and an RBI single from Jorgensen.
The junior led all Scotland hitters by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Damien Burr took the loss allowing six runs (all earned) while walking two and striking out four.
Purnell Swett (7-9, 2-4) put the game out of reach with two runs in the sixth and a two-run homer by Jacobs in the seventh.
The Scots will look to get back in the SEC hunt when they travel to Pinecrest Tuesday at 7 p.m.
