For those who like to combine physical activity with contributing to good causes, Saturday's FUNd Run-4-Life and the annual Scotland County CROP Walk on Sunday should fill that desire. The FUNd Run, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Dulin Center in Laurinburg, will offer three levels of activity: a 10-mile run, a 5K run/walk, and a one mile "fun run". Registration can be done from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. If you arrive too late to compete, you can make a donation and/or enjoy the band "Positive Charge" while you learn who the winners are at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the run go toward three key funds: the Compassionate Care Fund for indigent patients; the Patient and Travel Family Fund, for patients who cannot afford to make daily appointments or for those whose loved ones have to be transferred to another facility; and the Diabetes Education Fund, used to help promote education about the disease.
On Sunday, the 25th annual Scotland County CROP Walk, sponsored by the Scotland County Minister's Association and the Ministerial Alliance, will be held at Pate Stadium in Laurinburg beginning at 3 p.m. An acronym for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, the CROP Walk is designed "to take a stand against hunger". The event aims to bring walkers from all faiths, cultures and ages together in an event of unity. Up to 25 percent of what a CROP Hunger Walk raises can assist food banks, pantries, community gardens, and other local hunger fighting initiatives, according to organization literature. For those who appreciate intellectual achievement, the annual ACT-SO competition and awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Saturday at Avinger Auditorium on the campus of St. Andrews College. Sponsored by the Scotland County NAACP Youth, the 3 p.m. event brings high school students together to compete in categories including the humanities, the performing arts, the visual arts, business, and science. Those who win gold will travel to Kansas City, Mo. in July to compete on the national level. At 7 p.m., an awards ceremony will be held at the Highlands in Laurinburg to recognize both the day's winners and to present image awards to those community leaders who have made an impact on the youth of Scotland County. Awardees will include Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones, Yvonne Locklear, Jaimee Renee Scott, and others.
Dr. Taneka M. Williams of Wagram Family Practice will be the guest speaker. Tickets for the Image Awards will be $20 for adults and $10 for youth, and may be obtained by calling 277-8976 or 276-8917.
For children's activities, the annual Sunday in the Park will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the James. L. Morgan Complex at 1210 Turnpike Road in Laurinburg. Arts and crafts, the splash pad, and other activities will be featured. The first 500 children to attend under age 12 will receive a free t-shirt.
Saturday is planting day at the community gardens in Laurinburg. Plots are still available, and Organizer Sam Thompson invites all to register for a spot by visiting www.activelaurinburg.com or by calling Thompson at 318-3583. The event will be blessed by the Rev. Neal Carter, pastor of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, at 9:30 a.m.
