The Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families will join hundreds of organizations around the country this week in celebrating The Week of the Young Child.

This is an annual celebration that was established in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the world’s largest Early Childhood Education Association. This year’s theme is The Early Years Are Learning Years.

The Week of the Young Child brings to attention the needs of young children and their families, while highlighting the early childhood education programs and services available. It is a time to recognize that children’s opportunities are the community’s responsibilities, and to recommit to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment – at home, at child care, at school, and in the community – that will promote their early learning and their later success. The Week of the Young Child is a time to plan how citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation – will better meet the needs of all young children and families.

Local events honoring The “Week of the Young Child” include:

On Thursday, the Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families and the Scotland County Memorial Library will sponsor a Pajama Party for children and parents. The Literacy activity will feature storytellers from the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast. The event is from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Scotland County Memorial Library.

On Friday, Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families invites local and state government, and community members to a breakfast and a report on the status of children in Scotland County. The event will start at 8:00 a.m. at the A. B. Gibson Board of Education.

The week will end with Sunday in the Park. Various businesses and agencies within the county invite families to gather at Scotland Yard to celebrate children from 2 to 5 pm. on Sunday.

The week began Monday with a Provider Luncheon hosted by Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families. The event honored the Child Care Teaching Staff for their hard work and dedication to the Children of Scotland County.
