A 20-year-old Laurinburg man has been charged in a shooting last week that sent one to the hospital.

Shavonte Jarrell McBryde, of Blakely Road, was arrested Friday at 6:30 p.m. and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Detective Brian Gibson, Laurinburg police. His first appearance was Monday.

McBryde is accused of shooting Tyrrell Marquis Hayes, 22, of Cleveland Street on April 5. Hayes was treated at Scotland Memorial Hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg and released.

Gibson said Hayes recognized McBryde at the shooting and identified him by name to officers. He also picked McBryde out of a photo lineup.

Detectives believe the two had several arguments in the week preceding the incident.

McBryde was placed in Scotland County jail under a $75,000 secured bond.

He spent a year in prison after being convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and selling a schedule II controlled substance, according to the state Department of Correction. He also has a prior conviction for drug possession.

McBryde received an infraction for involvement with a gang while in prison, according to DOC.

"There is nothing to suggest that this incident was gang-related," Gibson said.

The detective said the shooting is still under investigation and there may be additional charges or arrests in connection with the incident.

Suspect sought

Police have drawn up warrants for a suspect in one of two shootings on Thursday.

Police are looking for 19-year-old Ernest Junior Locklear III, of N. Turnpike Road, Wagram, for allegedly damaging a vehicle during a drive-by shooting.

Sandra Locklear told police that Ernest Locklear fired a shotgun at a van in front of her Raleigh Street home at 12:28 a.m. while driving past in a blue sports utility vehicle, according to a police report. Ernest Locklear then drove off, shouting a racial slur at a black woman as he passed.

The second shooting was reported at 12:47 a.m. by James Hall, who was shot by bird shot from a shotgun by someone driving a dark sports utility vehicle, according to a report.

Hall told officers he was riding a moped down U.S. 401 bypass towards U.S. 74 Bypass when he was shot.

He then returned home, where he showered before going to Scotland Memorial Hospital with pellet wounds to his left eye, left shoulder and upper torso. Hall was then transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill for further treatment.

Gibson did not know if Hall had been released from the hospital.

Gibson said the incidents both involved a similar description of the vehicle and involved shotguns, but that investigators do not know if the shootings are related.

One of the reports noted the similarity between the two shootings.
