St. Andrews pitcher Ashley Disque fires in a strike during the seventh inning of game two with Wingate Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore pitched 10 1/3 innings on the day.
After No. 5 Southeast Region ranked Wingate University rolled to an 11-0 win in the first game, host St. Andrews Presbyterian College pulled off its most impressive win of the season with a 2-1 win in the second game as the local non-conference rivals split Wednesday’s softball doubleheader.

The Lady Knights (5-36 Overall) shocked the Lady Bulldogs (30-10) by riding the arm of sophomore Ashley Disque, who did not allow an extra-base hit in 10 1/3 innings of work.

SAPC will try and use the momentum from the big win heading into the final weekend of the regular season needed to sweep its final two Conference Carolinas doubleheaders to have any chance of qualifying for the conference tourney. The Knights visit Lees-McRae College on Saturday at Noon before hosting Limestone College on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Wingate returns to South Atlantic Conference (SAC) play on Saturday at Brevard College at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: Wingate 11, St. Andrews 0

Wingate scored 11 runs on 10 singles and 10 walks while holding St. Andrews to just one hit en route to the 11-0 win (fiving innings) in the opener.

Junior starter Brittany Blankenship faced the minimum in three innings of work to earn her team-high 16th win of the season. Blankenship (16-5) did not allow a hit while posting five strikeouts. Freshman Nancy Crawley tossed the final two innings to complete the shutout.

Knights’ senior Nicole Bailey led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single to break up the no-hit bid before Crawley retired the final six SAPC batters that including a pair of strikeouts.

Wingate jumped out to an 8-0 advantage with eight runs in the top of the second. The Bulldogs sent 14 batters to the plate in the extended frame that featured five singles and four walks. Senior Leyila Myers, junior Gina Ager, and freshman Stephanie Simmons all reached twice. Seven different Wingate batters manufactured runs during the outburst.

The Bulldogs produced three more runs in the fourth before coasting to the 11-run victory. The senior leadoff tandem of LaRonda McClain and Kelsey Emig ripped three singles apiece. McClain added two runs and two RBI to her final totals.

Senior starter Daisy Mendez took the loss for SAPC, allowing eight runs (four earned) over the first 1 2/3 innings. Mendez had the Knights only strikeout.

GAME TWO: St. Andrews 2, Wingate 1

Disque, who tossed the final 3 1/3 innings of the first game, hurled an impressive five-hit complete game in the nightcap as St. Andrews squeaked out a 2-1 win in the nightcap. Disque (4-19) only allowed one late run to a Wingate offense that was averaging 6.0 runs per game heading into Wednesday’s action. Disque scattered five hits over seven innings and ended the game with her second strikeout of the contest.

After two scoreless frames, St. Andrews took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Eryn Wiley started the rally with a one-out walk. Sophomores Lex Cowger and Kaitlin Harris added consecutive two-out singles, with Harris’ base-knock to right field scoring Wiley. Cowger then scored what proved to be an all important insurance run when an infield pop-up was dropped to extend the inning.

Wingate cut the deficit in half with its lone run in the top of the sixth as a single up the middle by junior Emily Chavis plated McClain, who led off the frame with an infield single before Disque was able to end the threat by retiring the next two Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs outhit SAPC, 5-3, and junior Allison Smith was the hard-luck losing pitcher after only allowing one earned run in the complete-game, three-hit effort. McClain and Chavis accounted for four of Wingate’s five hits with two singles apiece.

Bailey, who drilled a single to right in the fifth, was the only Knight to safely reach base in both games.
