Scotland’s Derek Barnes makes contact with a pitch in the fourth inning of Tuesday afternoon’s ball game. The center fielder finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
FAYETTEVILLE-After dropping a two-run decision to South View on Saturday, Scotland Coach Tommy Britt gave his players a new goal to reach for: win the next two games.

Consider that goal reached after Tuesday afternoon. A big inning didn’t hurt either.

The Scots sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth and scored seven runs, picking up its first 10-run rule of the season, 12-2, over tourney host, Douglas Byrd, in the third place game of the Holt Warren Easter Tournament.

Britt was pleased with how his boys responded in the last two games of the tournament.

“After we started out with a loss, we rebounded to go 2-0,” said Britt. “I was hoping that we weren’t going to come out flat, we swung the bats real well and got our first 10-run rule of the season.”

After putting up a two spot in the top of the first, Scotland (10-5) produced a run in the each of the next three innings to make 5-1.

During that time, the Eagles scored two runs on RBI groundouts by Adam Todd (first inn.) and Gary Parker (fourth inn.).

Between the two scores, Scots starter, Damien Burr, kept the Byrd (3-7) hitters off the base paths, retiring nine straight batters.

Following Parker’s run that made it 5-2, the Scots got RBI singles from John Yarbrough, Cody Marcure and Kwashawn Quick.

The big runs in the fifth inning came off the bat of Derek Barnes, who came up with a two-run double, helping him finish 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base.

Burr improved to 2-2 on the year with his performance against the Eagles.

The senior yielded only two runs on just four hits while striking out three. He also did not walk a batter.

With Curt Britt pitching the game against Richmond last Thursday, Tommy Britt wanted to avoid using his ace pitcher during the three-game tournament and saw some positive results from the rest of the rotation.

“Damien (Burr) worked real hard and was able to get ahead of most of the hitters,” Tommy Britt said. “Alex (Fricke) did a good job for us and Josh (Collins) gave us a quality outing despite the loss.”

Curt Britt (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Paul Yarbrough (2-for-4) complimented the sophomore Barnes at the plate.

Alex Fricke finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double while Quick finished 1-for-1 and collected his first varsity RBI for Scotland, who will travel to Southern Lee next Monday at 7 p.m.
