PEMBROKE – UNCP head football coach Pete Shinnick announced a familiar addition to his coaching staff on Monday afternoon as former running backs coach Jammie Deese rejoined the staff on a full-time basis as the wide receivers coach for the Braves.

He will fill the position vacated by Pat Kenedy and will assume his duties in August. Deese made a name for himself in both collegiate football at Wake Forest and professional football in the Arena Football League, and made his transition into the coaching world as a graduate assistant coach with the UNCP football team during its first two seasons of intercollegiate football.

Deese was on the UNCP staff as a graduate assistant coach during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, while serving as the running backs coach last season on a part-time basis. In addition to his coaching duties, he will also serve as a lecturer in UNCP’s HPER department.

An all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as a team captain with the Demon Deacons, Deese hauled in 184 passes during his Demon Deacon career for 2,348 yards (12.8 avg.) and 11 touchdowns. He led Wake Forest with 68 receptions for 826 yards as a junior, including three consecutive 100-yard days against ACC foes North Carolina State (167), Florida State and Georgia Tech (11/21).

The Laurinburg native helped Wake Forest to 18 wins during his career, including a 7-5 mark as a senior in 1999. In his lone bowl appearance in Winston-Salem – a 23-3 WFU win over Arizona State in the 1999 Aloha Bowl – he paced the Deacons with three catches for 38 yards.

All told, Deese amassed eight 100-yard receiving days during his career with the Black and Gold and led Wake Forest in receptions in each of his final two seasons.

Currently, he ranks third in both receptions and receiving yards behind a pair of NFL receivers, Ricky Proehl (Indianapolis Colts) and Desmond Clark (Chicago Bears). He also ranks 10th all-time at the school with 3,159 all-purpose yards.

Following a standout collegiate career, Deese moved on to the professional ranks, first spending the 2001 preseason with NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals, then hauling in 10 passes for 97 yards and returning seven kicks for 152 more as a member of the Arena Football League’s (AFL) now-defunct Carolina Cobras.

He also played four seasons for the 2007 National Indoor Football League (NIFL) champion Fayetteville Guard.

Deese received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wake Forest in 2000 and his master’s degree in physical education from UNCP in 2009.

The older brother of current UNCP linebacker Adam Deese, Jamie and his wife Brandi were wed on Nov. 18, 2007. He also has an older brother, Eric.
