The Scotland girls soccer team came into Wednesday night’s home contest with Richmond riding a three-game home scoreless streak.

A pair of early goals in the first half changed all that.

The Lady Scots found the back of the net twice in the first ten minutes to pick up a 3-1 victory over the rival Lady Raiders at Pate Stadium.

Scotland Coach Colin McDavid was pleased with the effort from his girls as the team improved to 4-4-1 overall and to .500 in the Southeastern Conference at 2-2.

“It was a big win for us tonight,” McDavid said. “Anytime that Scotland and Richmond face off, it is a big rivalry. The win, gives us some momentum going into spring break.”

Josie Yang, who finished with a hat trick in the match, scored the first two goals in a two-minute span of the first half.

The second goal came when the ball bounced off the cross bar and the senior scored on the rebound.

Chelsea Madden assisted on the first score.

“Josie managed to get some space and time and when she was challenged, other girls on the team stepped up to help her out,” said McDavid.

Richmond (1-8-2, 1-3 SEC) avoided the shutout with 10:47 to play in the game when Scotland’s Destinee Groves mishandled a Lady Raider shot attempt to make it 2-1.

Despite the mishap, the freshman goalkeeper came up with five saves.

“It was her best outing so far this season,” McDavid said. “She kept the defense organized and gave them confidence.”

Yang added an insurance goal with just under six minutes to play.

The Lady Scots return to action on Apr.12 when they travel to SEC foe Lumberton.

In jayvee’ action, Scotland (1-6-1, 0-3 SEC) dominated the whole second half but a first half goal by the Lady Raiders provided the only tally in a 1-0 defeat.
