All four members of SAPC’s senior class -- Jill Donofrio, Elise Moore, Nicole Richardson, and Carrie Jones -- scored during the Lady Knights ‘Senior Day’. The quartet was honored by the coaching staff after the game.
The Lady Knights won their second straight game to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-1 on the conference. The Fleet remain winless on the season at 0-14 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Junior Kim McDaniel led the Knights offensively with a career-high nine point performance including three goals and six assists. Freshman Megan Jolly followed with eight points, featuring a game-high four goals and four helpers.
Donofrio netted her first career hat trick in a Royal Blue & White uniform while Richardson’s tally was her first score of her final season.
McDaniel helped St. Andrews jump out to a 3-0 lead by scoring the game’s first goal and then assisting on a pair of goals by Jolly in a three and a half minute span.
Erskine freshman Von McKenzie scored the first of her two goals on a free-position attempt at the 21:57 mark of the first half to put the visitors on the board. St. Andrews responded with nine unanswered goals before McKenzie scored the Flying Fleets last goal on an assist from freshman Hillary Henry with 2:49 showing on the clock.
Jolly scored the final goal of the first half to give St. Andrews a 13-2 cushion at halftime. The Lady Knights scored all seven goals in the second half to reach the 20-goal plateau for the second time on the season.
SAPC dominated all facets of the game including a 43-6 shot surplus, 41-18 ground ball advantage, and 18-6 draw control edge. The Knights successfully scored on all three free-position shots attempted and posted a season-high 16 caused turnovers.
Junior Allie Faulhaber and sophomore Anna Egeln both provided St. Andrews with two goals and one assist. Jones and junior Brett Vyverberg each tallied one goal and one assist. The sophomore tandem of Shana Schroeder and Chelsea Ross also scored for the Knights.
Donofrio added seven ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls to her hat trick. Schroeder won a game-high five draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Achilles only faced two shots on goal but did have six ground balls and two interceptions for her fourth win of the season.
Sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Overley was busy protecting the Fleets’ cage, making 17 saves on 37 Knights shots on goal. Freshman Megan Stephansky had three caused turnovers and classmate Sara Goodman had a team-high three draw controls.
Royals outlast St. Andrews
Trailing by eight goals heading into the final 10 minutes, St. Andrews Presbyterian College made things interesting with six consecutive goals but Queens University of Charlotte scored two of the final three goals to squeak out a 15-12 Conference Carolinas women’s lacrosse victory.
Senior Kelley Duffey and sophomore Brittany Philip helped the Royals (4-7 Overall, 2-0) remain undefeate in league play with seven points apiece. Philip scored a game-high four goals and added three assists while Duffey had a hat trick and four helpers.
Junior Kim McDaniel and freshman Megan Jolly both recorded hat tricks, but the Lady Knights (4-6, 2-2) were unable to win a third straight game. Jolly had a team-high five points with two assists.
Queens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes on tallies by sophomore Shannon Casey and Philip but McDaniel responded for St. Andrews with a pair of goals in a 90 second span to knot the score for the only time at 2-2. Queens regained the lead for good with five unanswered goals by a quintet of Royals over an eight minute span. After two more Knights goals, Philip scored the final goal of the first half in the last minute to extend the Royals lead to four, 8-4, at halftime.
Sophomore Chelsea Ross capped a 7-1 run by the Knights with an unassisted goal with 78 seconds ticks to go that got St. Andrews to within two (14-12), but freshman Brittany Barnwell won the ensuing draw control and Queens maintain possession for majority of the final minute. After a yellow card in the final seconds, freshman Caitlin Miller put the exclamation point on the Royals win with a goal with three-tenths of a second on the clock.
Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Markle made 14 saves to earn the win in net for Queens. Junior netminder Morgan Achilles made eight of her 12 stops in the second half, helping St. Andrews make its rally.
Knights’ freshman Victoria Bickett and sophomore Anna Egeln both had one goal and one assist for the hosts. Ross rattled home two goals while junior Allie Faulhaber chipped in with one goal.
St. Andrews plays its home finale on Wednesday, when the Knights host No. 10 nationally ranked Pfeiffer University at 4 p.m. Queens entertains league rival and No. 4 ranked Limestone College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
