Ending a search that kicked off Sept. 22, the board of trustees voted unanimously Monday at a specially called meeting to send a list of finalists to Erskine Bowles, president of the University of North Carolina System.
Neither the number of finalists nor their names was released.
The application period closed in December with more than 50 nominations or applications. The 16-member search committee, which includes trustees, a student, community members, staff, faculty, alumni and foundation members, began reviewing candidates in January.
The selection process was closed and remains so in accordance with state law, which permits a public entity to discuss the qualifications of a prospective employee in closed session. Freda Porter, chairman of the board and search committee, and Joshua Malcolm, UNCP attorney and chief of staff, could not be reached for comment this morning.
Bowles charged the committee in September with bringing him three candidates for a final decision.
“If you do this, I promise you that I will do my job and pick from among those three candidates the next great leader of UNC Pembroke,” Bowles said in September.
Bowles is expected to send his recommendation to the UNC Board of Governors for approval at the April 9 meeting at North Carolina Central University in Durham.
When Allen Meadors was confirmed as chancellor in the spring of 1999, he was present at the Board of Governors meeting, said Scott Bigelow, spokesman for UNCP. The board charged Meadors with growing the university, moving out into the community, furthering economic development and building up public education in the region.
Meadors became chancellor on July 1, 1999. He left the college on June 30, 2009, to lead the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, his alma mater. In the interim, Charles Jenkins, a professor with UNCP since 1971 and retired provost, has led the university.
Bowles’ final choice should attend the April 9 meeting if the search ends the same way it did 11 years ago, Bigelow said.
