Scotland’s Trae Revels slides safely into third base during the third inning of Monday afternoon’s 15-1 win over the Bucks.
After their season opener lasted just five innings, the Scotland ninth-grade baseball team played five innings again Monday afternoon.

This time, darkness was not a factor.

The Scots put up a combined 12 runs in the second and fourth innings and improved to 2-0 with a 15-1 victory over Hoke County at Legion Park.

“The boys were able to hit the ball well today and they did a good job on the basepaths,” Scotland coach David Barnes said. “We were able to open up a big lead and it allowed everyone on the team to get into the game and play.”

After scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, Scotland loaded up the bases in the bottom of the second before Blake Bennett drove in two with a single to make 4-0.

Bennett led the charge with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with four RBIs.

The Scots made it 7-0 after two innings when three pass balls by Hoke (0-2) pitchers allowed runners to score.

Bennett also took care of business on the mound, not allowing a run on one hit and striking out six in two innings of work for the win.

“Blake (Bennett) set the tone for us early pitching,” Barnes said. “He was able to throw strikes and kept the hitters off the bases.”

Trae Revels made it an 8-0 game when he stole home in the third.

The Scots led 15-0 after four innings, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Blake Hunt and RBI singles from Nick Smith, Jalen McLean and Hayden Buffkin.

The Bucks avoided the shutout in the top of the fifth when a dropped third strike allowed Josh Henderson to reach first base safely, scoring the run from third.

Revels was one of three hitters with two hits in the game, finishing 2-for-2 while Buffkin went 2-for-3.

Buffkin relieved Cody Freeman, who threw two innings while striking out three, in the fifth and despite walking two, accomplished a rarity in baseball, he struck out four batters in an inning.

Scotland will remain at home when they entertain Purnell Swett at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
