SAPC softball drops three games at Patriot Invitational

FLORENCE, S.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College softball team was held to just five runs over three games as a trio of Peach Belt Conference institutions defeated the Knights at the Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion University (16-7) this past weekend at the Freedom Florence Softball Complex.

Freshman shortstop Devin Millhorn led the Royal Blue & White with a .429 average and a .500 on-base percentage over the three contests. Senior Danyell Marquez had the Knights only extra-base hit of the weekend, her second home run of the season.

St. Andrews returns to league play with a pair of road doubleheaders during the week. SAPC visits Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday and Mount Olive College on Wednesday. Both twin bills are slated to start at 5 p.m.

GAME ONE: Francis Marion 10, St. Andrews 1 (5 innings)

St. Andrews was held to just two hits as Francis Marion rolled to a 10-1 win in five innings on Friday.



Marquez drove in the Knights only run with a solo blast to lead off the second inning. Senior Brianna Shurtleff had a single and a walk in her two plate appearances.

Senior Daisy Mendez went the distance from the pitcher’s circle for SAPC, but was tagged with the loss.

GAME TWO: Armstrong Atlantic State 2, St. Andrews 1

In a pitcher’s duel Saturday, Armstrong Atlantic State University squeaked out a 2-1 victory as St. Andrews stranded seven runners on base including a bases loaded opportunity in the seventh.

Sophomore Ashley Disque kept the Knights in the game only allowing one run (ties her season best performance in 15 starts) over seven innings. Disque finished with three K’s.

GAME THREE: UNC Pembroke 7, St. Andrews 3

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke scored at least one run in each of the first six innings to pull out a 7-3 win over St. Andrews in the Knights final game of the Patriot Invitational.

The Knights tossed three hurlers with Marquez taking the loss in the starting role.
