The Scotland bats may still be waking up early in the season, but a big inning may have been what they needed.

The Scots took advantage in the fourth inning with three runs and held off Anson, 5-4, at McCoy Field Friday afternoon.

“Anson’s a good team and they gave us a scare,” said Scotland coach Tommy Britt. “The boys faced some good pitching from them. I’m real proud of our kids, our pitching came through again. We got some quality innings from our staff.”

Lead-off man Cody Marcure put the Scots up 1-0 in the first when he scored on a wild pitch during Damien Burr’s at-bat.

A sacrifice fly by Anson’s Josh Blalock tied the game at one in the second before the Bearcats went up 2-1 after a fielder’s choice from Garrett Treadway.

Scotland (2-0) came to life in the fourth inning when Greg Jorgensen put his team up 3-2 on a two-run double and John Yarborough made it a two-run lead (4-2) with a fielder’s choice.

“I just told the boys to keep plugging away, keep battling and they were able to put together some hits,” Britt said on the fourth inning. “Greg (Jorgensen) had a big hit down the line and Jajuan (Coleman) had a couple of good hits tonight. We were smart when running the bases and managed to pull out the win.”

The Scots added another run in the sixth inning before a two-run double by Treadway off of Francis Lloyd cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the seventh.

Josh Collins came in after Lloyd and got Anson’s Hunter Powell to groundout and struck out Blalock to strand to tying run on second base and pick up the save.

Jorgensen and Jajuan Coleman led the Scotland bats with both going 2-for-3.

Burr picked up the win for Scotland allowing two runs while striking out three in four innings of work. Dylan Dowdy took the loss for the Bearcats.

The Scots will be back in action Monday at 5 p.m. when they host Pine Forest.
