Charges have been dropped against one of 12 people arrested last month during a drug raid in Pembroke, according to North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement.

A Maxton man was among those charged.

Five charges against Stephen Chalmers Trent Lowery, 18, of St. Anna Road, Pembroke, were dismissed on Wednesday — two counts of intent to sell and deliver cocaine, two counts of selling and delivering cocaine, and one count of continuing a criminal enterprise. Lowery was out of jail after making his bond.

Jason Locklear, an assistant special agent with the ALE, said the charges were dropped because there was “some doubt” that Lowery committed the crimes.

“It was determined that we did not have enough probable cause to continue the prosecution of Stephen Lowery,” Locklear said.

Lowery’s grandmother, Mary Hunt, said that he was upset when he saw his photograph in The Robesonian and was hesitant to return to school at Fayetteville Technical Community College. She said he is pursuing a degree in engineering.

“He’s a good young person and he’s trying to make something of himself — he wouldn’t get involved in any of that,” Hunt said. “I told him to go ahead and go back to class because he didn’t do anything wrong.”

Lowery declined a reporter’s invitation to speak with The Robesonian.

ALE agents raided mobile homes at 114 Candy Park Road and 112 Hiawatha Road in Pembroke on Feb. 19 and seized cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs, drug paraphernalia, three rifles, four handguns, and more than $8,000 in cash.

The raid came after a two-year investigation by the ALE. A total of 93 felony charges were brought, but that number is now reduced to 88.
