Former Scotland standout Vance Chavis, shown here in 2008, is 2-0 for Western Carolina on the season.
The temperature may not be ideal for spring sports, but none the less, college baseball and softball teams around the country are kicking off their seasons.

Below is an update on some former Scotland High School standouts and their progress:

After Tommy John surgery sidelined him for over a year, Western Carolina’s (6-1) Vance Chavis has gotten off to a hot start.

The Red-shirt sophomore is currently 2-0 in two appearances this season with his most recent start being a complete game against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 28.

Chavis currently has a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched. He’s allowed just five runs while striking out nine. Opponents are batting just .163, which is the lowest of any pitcher on the Catamounts.

Up road at WCU’s rival, Appalachian State, 2006 graduate Chris Patterson is filling into the Mountaineers closer role pretty nicely.

The senior pitcher has converted on a pair of saves in three appearances for undefeated Appalachian State (6-0).

Along with a pair of saves in 3.2 innings pitched, he has yet to allow a hit while walking two and striking out five batters.

Jessica Milligan, a freshman pitcher at Gardner-Webb, has had her share of rocky outings this year.

Milligan is currently 2-1 in four appearances for Lady Runnin’ Bulldogs, which includes one starting appearance.

Through 15 innings of work, Milligan is sporting a 3.72 ERA with nine runs allowed on 21 hits while walking four and striking out two for Gardner-Webb (7-5).

After seeing his first action of the season against St. Andrew’s on Feb.10, Lee Oxendine has seen success in the closer’s role for Wingate (7-4, 4-2 SAC).

Oxendine is 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA for the Bulldogs this season.

In his seven appearances on the mound, he’s converted a pair of saves in nine innings pitched, along with allowing just three runs on nine hits while seven and striking out 14 batters.

Right here in Laurinburg, Ryan Pierce is continuing to contribute as a freshman, having pitched 6.1 innings in three appearances with eight strikeouts for SAPC.

Fomer Surry Community College product and teammate of Pierce’s, Matt Adams is doing his part in the field for the Knights.

Adams is currently hitting .267 through 11 games, including five starts.

In Durham, Edward Pegues is second on the North Carolina Central squad with a .300 batting average.

Pegues has seen action in four games for the Eagles this year, including a pair of starts.

Jay Flowers is making his presence felt at Emmanuel College in Georgia.

Flowers currently sports a .412 batting average with seven hits in 17 at-bats. Of those hits, three have been doubles.

The junior outfielder has a homer and four RBIs to add to his cause.
