The Scotland jayvee’ baseball team had them early in their opener with Jack Britt. Luckily, they got over them.
Led by a stellar pitching performance from Tim Chavis, the Scots overcame four unearned runs to pickup a 10-4 win over the Bucs.
Scotland coach Mike Sellers knew that the team would be a little nervous but was pleased with how they responded.
“I thought we were a little nervous at times. We didn’t quite play up to our abilities but that’s typical of a first game,” said Sellers. “But overall, the boys were able to comeback later in the ball game and execute. We were able to put the ball in play and get timely hits.”
Chavis entered the game in the third inning and kept the Jack Britt hitters of the bases, striking out 10 in four innings of work. William Adams relieved Chavis in the seventh and retired the side in order, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
“Chavis basically shut Jack Britt down from that point on,” Sellers said. “He was very dominant on the mound, blowing the ball by Jack Britt with his fastball.”
After tying the game up at 4-4 in the fourth, the Scots blew it open in the fifth
“Offensively, we knew that we were ahead of the game,” said Sellers. “We have a good hitting team, alot of speed, alot of power. We were able to put alot of runs on the board.”
Derrick Barnes paced Scotland by going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times.
Kershaun Quick and Daniel Walters each went 2-for-3. Quick had three runs batted in on a sacrifice fly RBI and and a two-run double. He would also score three times.
The Scots will open up their home slate at 5 p.m. today when they host Pine Forest.
