SAPC grapplers conclude season at regionals in Pennsylvania

Staff Report Freshmen Brian Beatson and Davin Morris each won one match by pin to highlight St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s results at the NCAA Super Region I Tournament hosted by the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown this past Friday and Saturday.

The young Knights wrestling program competed in the extremely talented regional that produced individual champions from eight different institutions, and 13-of-15 squads having at least one wrestler advance to the NCAA Division II Finals in Omaha, Nebraska on March 12-13. SAPC had a grappler compete in each of the 10 weight classes at the regional for the first time in the program’s four year history and all 10 Knights are underclassmen. After being pinned in his first match by Casey Hines (AIC) in five minutes and 15 seconds, junior Andre Ellerbe had the Knights closest score of the tournament in his final match. Ellerbe (6-12) battled hard but lost a 6-5 decision to Pat McClure (Seton Hill).

Lake Erie storms past Knights baseball in extra innings

St. Andrews Presbyterian College freshman pinch hitter Jeff Brothers ripped a two-out, two-run double to the right-center field warning track in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings but Lake Erie College posted five runs in the 10th inning to escaped with a 15-11 win on Sunday afternoon at Clark Field.

The Storm (1-0) scored 15 runs on 15 hits in their season-opener while the Knights (1-14-1) drop their fourth game of the weekend. Senior Josh Axelsen led SAPC offensively going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three runs battin in, and two runs scored.

Classmate Samson Williams was the only other Knight to hit safely more than once with a pair of triples. SAPC junior reliever Kyle Schneider took the loss allowing the five runs in his only inning of work. Laurinburg native, Freshman middle reliever Ryan Pierce, recorded a game-high seven strikeouts over 5 1/3. The Knights dropped a doubleheader to Conference Carolinas foe Esrkine on Saturday, 16-7 and 1-0.

Falcons sweep SAPC in knights softball conference opener

Senior Danyell Marquez was the only St. Andrews Presbyterian College player to pick up a hit in each game of an 11-3 and 9-1 Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader loss to visiting Pfeiffer University.

The Falcons ripped 26 total hits to even their records at 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Lady Knights fall to 3-12 and 0-2 after opening league play. St. Andrews next travels to Georgia for a pair of Southeast Region twin bills over spring break. The Lady Knights visit Augusta State University today at 1 p.m. and Georgia College & State University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

In action from Saturday, sophomore catcher Lex Cowger accounted for four of St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s 12 total hits in a non-conference doubleheader loss (6-2 & 11-3) to Francis Marion University.

Classmate Kaitlin Harris added three base knocks for the Lady Knights. Junior right-handed pitcher Cea Knox registered two wins on the mound and four hits, a home run, and three RBIs at the plate for the Patriots (10-4).

No. 7 Dowling breaks away from St. Andrews in fourth quarter

The seventh nationally ranked Dowling College men’s lacrosse team scored 6-of-7 goals in the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie en route to a 13-8 non-conference victory at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon.



With the score tied 7-7 early in the fourth, senior Kyle O’Brien scored the go-ahead goal for the Golden Lions at the 12:17 mark. O’Brien’s tally started a three-goal outburst by Dowling in an 84 second span that gave the visitors control.

The Lions (1-0) begin the season with a win on the strength of a seven point performance by O’Brien, who finished with five goals and two assists. Senior Brandon Bergersen and freshman Kevin Sabo both had four points for Bryant by providing two goals and two helpers apiece.

Freshman Riley Fink led the winless Knights (0-3) with three points including a pair of goals. Classmate Bobby Murray also found the back of the net twice. Young added five ground balls and five caused turnovers to his one goal and one assist. Carnaggio dished out two assists while freshman George Pugh tallied his first collegiate goal and assist. Senior Aren Montgomery and sophomore Chris Michela had the Knights other goals.

St. Andrews will make a trip to the sunshine state for a pair of games during spring break. The Knights visit Saint Leo University on Friday, Mar. 5 at 7 p.m., before concluding the trip at Rollins College on Sunday, Mar. 7 at 1 p.m.
