According to Emma McNeil-Stone, principal of I. Ellis Johnson, the six-week campaign was a tremendous success.
She said that the support from students, staff and the community was phenomenal.
The AIG students are now planning to celebrate the successful campaign by launching 400 balloons into the sky. The 400 balloons represent the 400 students enrolled at I. Ellis Johnson Elementary School. We want the recipients of this fundraising effort to know that each student at I Ellis Johnson contributed to the campaign. Student organizers are planning for all partners to be involved with the balloon launch which will take place on March 9 at 10 a.m. on the campus of I. Ellis Johnson.
Emma McNeil Stone, Principal, Barbara Pegues, PTO President, and Cynthia Johnson, AIG program facilitator will present a check to Carol Ann Lentz, executive director of the Scotland-Robeson County chapter American Red Cross.
A banner signed by each student and designed Lafayette Gould, will accompany the check. The school’s business partners and community leaders have been invited to participate in the celebration.
“We must always demonstrate to our students that all brothers and sisters in humanity and we help our brothers and sisters in times of need” according to Dr. Terry Franklin, assistant principal.
Parents actively participated in many events during the entire fundraising campaign. A program introducing the American Red Cross as partners was held at I. Ellis Johnson to kickoff the campaign. Other events included a “Haiti Poster Contest”; “Honk Twice for Haiti Day”; and “Haiti Hat Day”. Bracelets made and sold by one of the parents brought in donations. Another parent was responsible for developing a “Haiti Hope Sheet” to assist with collecting donations. Finally, another parent donated a quilt for a raffle. The Haiti Fundraising Campaign was truly a school-community effort.
