Authorities have arrested a convicted felon they believe is one of the shooters involved in a series of shootings near Nichols Street this week.

Stephen C. McEachin, 21, was arrested Wednesday night as a parole absconder and may be facing additional charged for his alleged involvement in several shootings, according to Laurinburg police Detective Chris Young. The officer did not have bond information.

Young said McEachin had been charged in 2005 at the age of 16 with shooting Calvin Lamont Adams and is currently on supervised parole for that offense. He violated that parole, which was set to end April 30.

McEachin is believed to have been exchanging gunfire with Adams, now 28, near Duncan Smith Apartments on Nichols Street, Young said. Adams had a court appearance on Wednesday in another matter and was placed on supervised probation.

Several shootings have occurred in this area over the past few days, including on incident that sent a Laurinburg man to the hospital and another that left a hole in the rear end of a police cruiser.

Both men have criminal histories, according to Young.

McEachin served more than 5 years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, the charge from shooting Adams, as well as breaking and entering, larceny and drug charges, according to the North Carolina Department of Correction.

While in prison, McEachin was cited for 23 infractions, including two for gang involvement and several for fighting and assaulting a guard. He also had prior convictions for breaking and entering, larceny and another drug charge.

Adams spent five months in prison for convictions on three different charges of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, two counts of resisting arrest and one count each of assault by pointing a gun, breaking and entering, and receiving stolen goods, according to DOC records. He also had prior convictions for assault by pointing a gun, resisting arrest and lying to officers, for which he received a suspended sentence and probation.
