UNCP shortstop and reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week Holly Berry went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in helping lead the Braves to the eight-run rule victory in five innings.
Berry was one of four Braves to drive in multiple runs, with teammates Courtney Hill, Randi Pruitt and Jelena Shaw each posting two RBI. Leadoff batter Jamie Burwell went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk scoring three runs for UNCP's offense. Pembroke improves to 9-3 on the season with the win while St. Andrews falls to 3-8.
All in all UNCP scored 11 runs on 12 hits while committing three errors on defense while holding the Knights to just three runs on six hits.
Caroline Newman (6-3) picked up her sixth win of the season giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Sophomore Ashley Disque took the loss for the Knights allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with four walks and two strikeouts as she fell to 3-6 this season. Harris and senior Brianna Shurtleff each went 2-for-3 at the plate for SAPC with Harris launching a home run to left in the third. Harris’ solo shot was her first collegiate long ball.
UNCP opened up the scoring in the first inning when Hill doubled to left-center to score a pair of runners and give the Black & Gold an early two-run lead. Pruitt singled to left with a runner on third to put the Braves up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
After recording two outs in the Knights' half of the first Harris singled and then was brought home by a senior Morgan Farroll triple down the right field line to get SAPC on the scoreboard. Farroll eventually scored on a Pembroke error to cut the lead to a run at 3-2 after an inning.
The Braves loaded the bases in the top of the second for Shaw who singled to drive in two runs to push UNCP's lead to 5-2. Berry singled one batter later to plate another run for the Braves who took a 6-2 lead into the third.
Harris cut the Pembroke lead to three with a solo shot to left in the bottom of the third but the Knights could not get a rally going and would trail 6-3 heading into the fourth.
Berry and Pruitt each drove in a run in the top of the fourth to increase the Braves lead to 8-3. The Braves then scored three runs in the top of the fifth to complete their scoring.
The Knights would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth but would be unable to post any runs as Pembroke shut the door on a SAPC comeback.
St. Andrews hosts Francis Marion University on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
